To undergo pancha karma treatment, a certain process has to be followed. This consists of three stages, some of which are often neglected and which provide less than optimal results in the therapeutic procedure.
1. Ama pachana
Means mobilizing toxins by means of herbal medication. Procedures will vary depending on the individual complaint.
Most people who travel to India from the west neglect this very vital stage. Generally, upon arrival at his destination, the patient finds that he lacks time to invest in the ama pachana process due to his only having a maximum of either three of four weeks of leave at his disposal. This consists of the vital first consultation which includes the diagnosis of patient´s problem according to Ayurvedic principles. Additionally, nutritional advice and detoxification by intake of herbal medication. Further: the setting up of a personal patient chart on which the purva karma treatment is set down. Also the calculation of time to be invested to undergo the therapies of Purva- (second stage) and pancha Karma . Ama Pachana preparations should be taken for a minimum of 14 days before commencing the Panchakarma.
2. Purvakarma and Panchakarma (This second stage of treatment will be 14 to 45 days)
Purva karma is the name given to the medicated oil and sweating therapies. The five different types of cleansing therapies are called “Pancha karma” Depending on the individual condition of each patient, varying therapies are selected out of the pancha karma program.
3. Rasayana or follow up treatment
This is the final stage of the Ayurvedic treatment and this nourishes the system, thereby building it up in the long run and ensuring maintainance of stability.
